Artist Talk and Workshop with the Charleston County Public Library: Marcus Amaker

This event is taking place at the Charleston County Public Library John L. Dart Branch, 1067 King Street, Charleston, SC 29403

Responding to artworks on view at the Gibbes Museum of Art in the exhibition Black Refractions: Highlights from the Studio Museum in Harlem (May 24-August 18, 2019), local artists will share their creative processes. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own artworks inspired by the exhibition in a hands-on workshop following that artist talk.

Marcus Amaker: Express Yourself(ie)
"To stunt is to show off, flaunt, or floss. In Untitled (Psychosocial Stuntin’), [Juliana] Huxtable resolutely fashions herself, gazing defiantly back at the camera and viewer from within a vivid space of her own Photoshopped creation. . . . Take a selfie in which you create an avatar—a psychosocial portrait of yourself.

About Marcus Amaker
Marcus Amaker is a karaoke singer, a Kate Bush fan and a donut eater. He is an award-winning graphic designer for a national music magazine, and works with nonprofits to create websites, posters and videos. In 2010, he founded Charleston Scene for the Post and Courier. In 2017, he created the Free Verse poetry festival. As a musician, he's released 26 electronic albums and two records with Grammy-nominated producer Quentin Baxter. Marcus was named Charleston's first Poet Laureate in 2016, and has published 7 books of poetry. He is a mentor for hundreds of local students. Dig into his work here.
