The Gibbes Museum of Art is pleased to announce Jerry Saltz, Pulitzer Prize winner and senior art critic at New York Magazine, as the keynote speaker at the museum’s annual Distinguished Lecture Series on November 2, 2022. This program was founded to bring cultural leaders to Charleston, and for more than eight years, the Gibbes has welcomed creative influencers in art, culture and architecture to speak on their craft. Saltz will join a list of prestigious speakers as he shares his inspiring insight, experience and story with Charleston audiences.

“It is an honor to welcome Jerry Saltz to Charleston for the Distinguished Lecture Series,” says Angela Mack, executive director of the Gibbes Museum of Art. “There has never been a more important time to cultivate a discerning, critical eye, so we are thrilled to offer this rare opportunity to hear from one of the most influential and experienced critics in the art industry.”

Saltz is the senior art critic at New York Magazine and its entertainment site, Vulture. He was an art critic for The Village Voice from 1998 until 2007, when he joined New York magazine, and was nominated twice for the Pulitzer Prize during his tenure there. He is the winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize in Criticism and the 2019 National Magazine Award. A frequent guest lecturer, Saltz has spoken at the Guggenheim, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.

Saltz’s writing can be seen in New York Magazine, Vulture, Medium, Smithsonian Magazine and many other art publications. He also authored a New York Times Bestseller “How To Be An Artist,” brimming with inspiration, rules, prompts and practical tips for emerging artists and creatives.
