This ongoing exhibition was created to increase access to the arts for the visually impaired and to provide visitors the opportunity to experience art through the sense of touch. By handling these objects, the dynamic and rich textures of painting, visceral qualities of sculpture, and fine lines of etching can be enjoyed by an important part of the arts community.
Hands On! is made possible by funding from the N. E. Miles Donor Advised Fund of the Birmingham Jewish Foundation with special thanks to Dr. Ettaleah Bluestein for her ongoing support. For the safety of the artwork, visitors must be accompanied by a museum educator when experiencing the touch collection. Please contact the education department for more information at (843) 722-2706, ext. 41.
